RNP

In 2004 USP established an agreement with Rede Nacional de Ensino e Pesquisa – RNP (www.rnp.br) which is the organization in Brazil which is responsible for the installation and maintenance of the national Internet backbone. This agreement intended to host the RNP’s Point of Presence (PoP) in the state of São Paulo. This point named PoP-SP is hosted in the data center of CeTI-SP. The main advantages offered through the PoP-SP are:

  • Ease in the development of cooperative projects between national and international  teaching and research  institutions that can benefit from the connection of the RNP backbone and the other international backbones like CLARA (Cooperação Lationo Americana de Redes Avançadas –  http://www.rnp.br/redes/clara) in Latin America ,  GÉANT (European Network Project – www.geant.net) in Europe or Internet2 (www.internet2.edu) in North America .
  • Integration with the networks of the main theaching and research faculties of the sate of São Paulo, including USP itself, constituting in a big advanced networked infrastructure named RNP2. Presently the PoP-SP provides services and conectivity to the RNP backbone to aproximatedly 20 institutions (see  http://www.rnp.br/conexao/instituicoes.php?nome=&id_estado%5B%5D=SP);
  • Facilitate the participation of researchers in project coordinated by RNP, like GIGA (http://www.rnp.br/pd/giga); Projeto Rede Universitária de Telemedicina – RUTE (http://rute.rnp.br); Projeto Rede de Intercâmbio de Televisão Universitária – RITU;
  • Allow for the integrated networks to utilize the infrastructure of the RNP network – as a transit network to reach other worldwide networks (either connected to the commercial Internet or to the Internet2)
  • Cooperation between USP’s computer security incident team with CAIS which is RNP’s computer security incident team, in incidents related to various Autonomous System Number, as well as the participation in security events promoted by RNP.

USP also takes part of the CaFE-RNP federation in which  every  community member, by the use of its USP’s institutional credentials, can have available services like:

  • Eduroam. Grants WiFI access of the participant universities so every person can has access to WiFi in any campuses,  when visiting USP or visited by USP.
  • Filesender.rnp.br. When large files need to be exchanged there is a need of only of one link to be exchanged, after giving USP’s credentials
  • CAPES Portal. Acessible from everywhere in the world.
  • JEMS2 SBC’s Portal. (Soon)
  • And any other services to be homologated by RNP in the CAFÉ federation
